A strong complaint letter follows a clear structure that shows you mean business. Here's what every good complaint letter should include:
Vague complaints are easy to dismiss. Include the exact date the problem started, any dates you reported it, and names of anyone you spoke to. For example: "I reported the damp on 4 March 2025 by email and received no response."
For landlord complaints, cite the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 and your right to a home fit for habitation. For faulty goods, reference the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Our AI automatically includes relevant UK legislation.
Don't just describe the problem — state the exact remedy you want and a reasonable deadline. "I require the boiler to be repaired by Friday 17 May 2025" is much more actionable than "please sort this out."
A good complaint letter signals what happens next if they don't act: the local council, Citizens Advice, the ombudsman, Trading Standards, or a solicitor. This shows you're serious and know your rights.
